We promised an update on how our Southwark schools were progressing and judging from these latest pictures they are coming along well, with the Albion Primary School project handed over in August and having welcomed its first pupils at the beginning of this term.
The classroom sits directly above a London Underground tunnel, which presented some challenges for the team. We had to submit foundation plans to Transport for London to ensure the loadings didn’t compromise their underground structure and that any vibrations emanating from the tunnel wouldn’t affect the classroom. Our design was eventually approved, and even though the delay affected the programme initially, this was overcome and the building is now in use and looks great.
The second project is a new building for Dog Kennel Primary School in East Dulwich (see pics) and it is just a month away from completion. We’ve demolished and removed the old building, undertaken extensive ground works, including ground reduction, building an 80 metre retaining wall, putting in new drainage and duct work.
We are currently constructing large amphitheatre steps (see pic) linking the existing nursery playground to the new facility. When this has been completed we will erect a large multi-coloured canopy spanning the front elevation of the new building and the adjacent building. It has been designed to highlight the aesthetic qualities of the finished classroom building which, when complete, will have a black render combined with thermowood cladding external finish.
Throughout the project, our design team has been in constant dialogue with the client and the school governors, who have been very involved in developing the design and making regular changes to the external package. Commenting on the project Danzer Ltd’s Dan Holloway said: “The Dog Kennel project had some challenges as access to the site was tricky and the school specified an unusual freestanding canopy which needed a creative solution. This, combined with the on-going design changes proved a challenge but we worked hard to resolve the difficulties and it’s great to see this lovely looking building almost ready to go.”
The Dog Kennel and Albion instructions are two of three contracts for Danzer Ltd from the London Borough of Southwark to manufacture and install new education facilities. The third school is The Charles Dickens Primary School in Southwark (see our earlier story).
The project is awaiting secondary planning approval which is due in the first week in October. The classroom has been manufactured and is currently sitting in our factory! The foundations have been dug, and we are all ready to deliver the building as soon as the secondary approval has been granted. We look forward to showing you more pictures soon.
