James Kelly AV Danzer Health and Safety

We are delighted to announce that James Kelly, our Operational Health and Safety Officer has been awarded chartered status by the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health.

James, who has been a key driver in implementing AVDanzer’s health and safety policies since he joined the company in 2015, explains what the accreditation will mean to him and the safety of his colleagues and customers.

Q: What does this mean to the business – how will you implement this at AVDanzer?

A: It gives us a status which is recognized by clients and suppliers alike as a source of information for health and safety. It helps when we are trying to achieve accreditations such as the Contractors Health and Safety Assessment Scheme and for membership of organisations like Constructionline. It also demonstrates how seriously we take Health and Safety as a company – we want to make sure that we not only meet but that we exceed every level of compliance.

Q. What does it mean to you personally ?

A. Personally this is a major development in my career. It will help me to achieve greater recognition in the wider world of health and safety as a legitimate and audited health and safety practitioner.

Q. What does your typical week look like from a H&S point of view ?

A. It involves frequent travel to our other depots and sites around the country in Nottingham and London, communicating with line managers and operatives, analysing our safe working procedures and making improvements where we need to.

I also organise and implement staff training where required, sometimes using external training providers and sometimes I deliver it myself.

On site I audit our safe working procedures and make sure that all of our operatives are compliant with our company processes and policies. We work closely with our customers too to resolve any complex safety issues a site may have such as tricky access or for example at schools where children may be around. I often end up mucking in and lending a hand to site units while I’m there!

Q. What other Health and Safety qualifications do you hold ?

A. I have National Examination Board Occupational Safety and Health (Nebosh) qualifications (General, Construction and Fire) as well as a Level 5 Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety.

Q: What did the training involve ?

A: In order to become qualified I had to be assessed on my Continuous Professional Development. Once I had passed I had to take 2 examinations, one essay based exam and one question and answer exam. Having passed the exam section I then had to give a presentation about myself, my career and job aspirations. I was asked a lot of questions about Health and Safety by the 3 assessors. Having passed each stage I was the awarded the chartered status which was a fantastic achievement.
